Skin Tips: Looking after sensitive eyes

By Skincarers

Our new weekly tip sheet for looking after sensitive skin.

This week: Eye Make-Up Removal

NEVER, EVER pull, drag or stretch the skin around your eyes. This actually applies to all skin, not just sensitive skin, but you really should try extra hard if you do have sensitive skin and/or sensitive eyes. It’s not easy to get eye make-up off without pullingĀ  but there is a way – you just have to be patient (not easy, we know, when it’s late, you’re tired and you just want to get your make-up off and get to bed!).

  1. Moisten a nice soft cotton pad with tepid water.
  2. Put a good blob of your eye make-up remover on the pad and ensure the pad is well covered with remover.
  3. Place the pad on your eye and press very very gently for a few seconds.
  4. Lift off and then repeat a few times to dissolve your make-up. A really good remover should start to dissolve your make-up almost immediately and make-up should come off on the pad. NB at no time should you be moving the pad!
  5. Change the cotton pad if it has a lot of make-up on already.
  6. To remove mascara, close your eye. Apply the pad to your eye, pressing gently on your eyelashes then sweep the pad lightly down along your lashes.
  7. With your eye still closed, apply gently to the underside of the lashes and sweep gently upwards.
  8. Repeat the above steps until no more mascara comes off.
  9. Remove any remaining smears (of eyeshadow or pencil) around the eye by pressing the pad to the eye and lifting off (a sort of blotting motion). It WILL all come off!
  10. If you use an oil-based remover, blot off the remaining oil with a soft tissue.
  11. Apply eye-cream or moisturiser, dotting it around the eye then patting it in gently.

  1. Skin Tips: How to cleanse, tone and moisturise sensitive skin « All about sensitive skin Says:

[...] Take a soft cotton wool wipe and dampen slightly. Put a good dollop of cream cleanser on the pad or gently apply the cleanser directly to your face and neck, massaging it in gently. Take the pad and swipe it gently (sorry, you are going to hear that word a lot) upwards and outwards. Start with your neck then move to your face.  Continue with light upward strokes until the pad is dirty then use a new pad. Avoid tugging, pulling or dragging at any point and particularly around the eye area. For the specifics of removing eye make-up, see our post Looking after Sensitive Eyes by clicking here. [...]
